On April 10, 2026, the vibrant campus of Morse High School in San Diego was transformed into a hub of culture, learning, and community for the 4th Annual People of Pasifika High School Conference & Showcase. Hosted by the Morse Islander Student Association (MISA), this event brought together over 250 students from across the San Diego Region for a day dedicated to celebrating Pacific Islander heritage, fostering leadership, and strengthening cultural identity.
A Day of Cultural Enrichment and Belonging
The conference, running from 8:00 AM to 3:40 PM, featured a variety of enriching activities designed to empower Pacific Islander youth. Students and teachers participated in cultural workshops and educational sessions that highlighted the diverse traditions, creative art expression, and cuisine. The event also included a lunchtime showcase, where students enjoyed performances and demonstrations celebrating the music, dance, and customs of the Pacific Islands.
Building Connections and Community
More than just a celebration, the conference served as a platform for networking and advocacy. Students engaged with community leaders, including keynote support from Nani Schott, and connected with peers from different schools, building lasting relationships and support networks. Workshops on topics such as cultural preservation and youth leadership encouraged students to take pride in their heritage and to advocate for themselves and their communities.
Honoring Youth Leadership and Service
A highlight of the day was all the cultural workshops and other interactive activities, which underscored the importance of youth leadership and service within Pacific Islander communities. Through these experiences, students were inspired to embrace their roles as cultural ambassadors and future leaders.
Continuing a Legacy of Empowerment
The success of the 4th Annual People of Pasifika Conference & Showcase reflects the dedication of the Morse Islander Student Association (MISA) and community partners to promoting cultural pride, advocacy, and academic achievement among Pasifika youth. The event's success was made possible by key leaders, including Nani Schott, Morse MISA Advisor and the conference's primary contact, and Dr. Cynthia Larkin, Principal of Morse High School, along with all the supportive staff at Morse High School and our MISA student member cabinet and ambassadors.

These 91 students help make this conference a success; therefore, thank you to all of you for helping spread the love of our Pacific Islands! MISA student organizers worked alongside outside organizations such as Imahen Tao Tao Tano National Pacific Islander Education Network (NPIEN), CHELU, Ngāti Ānahera, SDSU PISA, Office of Samoan Affairs, Mesa College, APIDA SDSU, San Diego City College, USD Poi Club, San Diego Pacific Islander Festival Association, A’a Ryan Hui O’ Hawaii, El Camino College Educator, Na Koa Kai Canoe Club, and Skyline Hills Library
The conference was generously supported by Morse High School staff and administration as well as parents and community members. As the event concluded, students left with a renewed sense of belonging and commitment to preserving their rich heritage for generations to come, and some left having learned and enjoyed the Pasifika culture.
