2012 Annual Conference – Planning has Begun!
2012 KEYNOTE SPEAKER
We are looking for two speakers for our opening and closing
general sessions. Our preference is a speaker that will
promote higher education, from the fields of education,
business, law, health, etc. where Pacific Islanders are
underrepresented. Last year’s speaker was Anna-Rita Sloss,
founder and creator of Hot Hula© fitness.
2012 CALL FOR PRESENTERS
- Please submit proposals no later than February 28,
2012. We have a limited number of presentations (six),
as our conference is a community conference designed for all
ages. Due to a large number of proposals, not all
proposals will be accepted.
- 2011 Presenter for Teachers (1 hour): Margaret Sanborn,
Executive Director/Principal,
Pacific American
Academy “The Value of Education from the Pacific Islander
Perspective”
- 2011 Presenter for Teachers (1 hour):
Dan Lunaria, National Education Association (NEA), Washington
D.C. “The Native Hawaiian Project” NPIEN and NEA members worked
on a curriculum for teachers
- Presenters for the
Middle School, High School, and College Student Session (1
hour): Panelists Dr. Joseph L. De Torres, Contra Costa College,
Joann Simi, CSU East Bay Student, Nancy Martinsen and Laty
Johnson, CSU East Bay “Stories-Hidden Secrets” discussed their
experiences in higher education
- Arts and Crafts (2
hours) for All Ages presented by NPIEN Board. The creation
of “Geckos.”
- Dance Workshops (1 hour) for
Adults and Students by the Linaka Polynesian Dancers. We
are looking for Micronesian dance workshops this year, as well
as Polynesian dance.
- Ukulele Instruction (1 hour)
with Uncle Henry Kamae and Falana’i Ala
2012 Career and
College Fair (2 hours)
- This year’s fair will be held
in a large indoor facility. We welcome the participation
of colleges and universities, and career mentors. Fee
waivers are available if needed.
- 2011 College
and Career Fair: Cerritos College, Los Angeles Police
Department, Asian Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund,
Walden University, Alfred Wilmovsky, Cerritos College, CSU

Performing Groups

We normally invite five Pacific
Islander student clubs, middle school or high school, to perform
in our opening and closing ceremony. Because of high
demand to participate, groups are selected on a merit system,
based on active NPIEN Membership and participation. Let us
know early if you are interested

- If your school is not selected, all students in the dance
workshop and ukulele class perform in the closing ceremony.

Official Conference Hotels for 2012
- We are looking for one or two hotels, at rates
affordable for college students and teachers. We are
seeking the government rate. Proximity to LAX or the Long
Beach Airport in important. We normally do not have enough
out of town guests to reserve a room block.
